Orris root is the dried rhizome of sweet iris species, Iris germanica, Iris florentina, and Iris pallida. The roots of these plants are hung to dry for 3 to 5 years before processing to extract some of the most precious materials ever to be used in perfumery. Their scent is incomparable, as powerful as it is subtle and has been described as tenaciously flowery, violet, powdery, rooty and woody. The performance of orris root in perfumes is as outstanding as it is beautiful, having both a fixative and an exalting effect, similar to ambergris.
